Physical enjoyments

I always speak about that “good feeling” that a dancer has to follow when he or she dances. But a “good feeling” is an abstract term. What does that mean?

If you have nice thought that makes you happy, that’s a different good feeling like the one you have, when you are getting massaged. What I am pointing at, are physical enjoyments.

There are some reference points that I think everybody knows from their own experience which describes the kind of “good feeling” I am talking about.

The false brother of trance

Did you notice that everything has a false brother? T the false brother of self-love is narcissism. The false brother of love is attachment. The false brother of unconditional love is addiction. The false brother of giving a compliment is flattering. The false brother of surrender is resignation.

Automatism looks like trance

Many times I meditated and thought that I deeply sunk into myself and immersed myself into the void of nothingness, and then I woke up and realized that I was just sleeping. The false brother of trance is automatism which is sleeping consciousness.

The difference between evolution and innovation

The false brother of the higher self is the ego. While the higher self comes as intuition, the ego is a collection of thoughts. The ego can only evolve, but only the higher self can innovate. The difference between innovation and evolution is: innovation brings out something that didn’t exist before, whereas evolution is a re-arrangement of things that already has existed. Symbolically spoken: Innovation brings “children” into existence without parents, while the children of evolution have parents.

Keep the creative mind always active

Dancing is not something you do. Dancing is something that happens with you. If you truly dance, you will feel like something is pushing and pulling you, swirling you around. In order to connect the so-called “higher self”, you have to surrender. But be aware, you can be taken over by the automatism of the ego. Then you may believe that you had a trance, but your creative mind actually was not active and your dance was an automated repetition of what you already knew.

A hint to not fall into automatism

A hint whether you are connected with the higher self or not is the spontaneous occurrence of moves and ideas that you can not remember, that you have ever done or seen before. These moves pop out of nothing and they really surprise you.

Why we need to dance

The need for self-expression

We have a natural inborn need for self-expression. Remember the moments where you feel joy, anger, or sadness, but the circumstances do not allow you to express your emotions. Holding back anger makes you feel like a volcano that wants to erupt but cant and often it’s starting to eat you up from inside. Suppressed sadness could accumulate and breaks through the surface as depression. In order to be in balance, we need to express what is in us.

Dancing is a non-verbal expression

We don’t necessarily need to speak verbally about what we feel. It is very satisfying if we can embody emotions through dancing. It doesn’t matter how we express ourselves, it just needs to go out somehow. Dancing gives us the room to do that and what comes out is just art. That’s pretty awesome.

The need for self-realization

Self-realization is everything we are searching for in our life. It is the basic goal in any spiritual practice, and it is a monster task. It doesn’t come from studying books. It is something that only comes from real experience in engagement with the true nature of life. The nature of life and death. This experience only comes if a human goes on an adventure, into the unknown.

The need for a journey

The journey is gives an answer to a fundamental question everyone has: What for am i here? Whats the meaning of my existence?

The journey is within

There are many possibilities to go on a journey. The attempt to dance freely from the soul will take every human on an adventurous, life-long journey. The joy one experiences by looking at a flower is happening in one’s own head. The entire experience of existence is happening within us.

Dancing is a hero’s journey

Dancing will fly you high to the moon and will pull you down in the dark abyss of the ocean. It will burn you with fire to ash and then let you rise like the phoenix. It will let you dry out in the desert and freeze to death only to show you, that you actually have the power to let it rain if you wish and enlighten a fire with your bare hands.

Creating new moves

Hello fellow ecstatic dancers worldwide. My name is Frank Lee, the dancing guy with the long hair. Welcome to my first ecstatic dance audio quaratine warmup. Most of us are probably at home in their rooms. Let us use this situation to our advantage and practise some new dancing skills. I hope you created some space in your room to dance. So the idea is: The more freedom we have to move, the more deepness and joy we can experience through our dance. A major part of an ecstatic dancers practise consists of getting out of the box, on all – mental, physical and emotional – levels. The more room – in a sense of movement -, we have to express ourselves, the more intense the experience can be and the chances to reach ecstatsy grows. Unlike our usual ecstatic dance parties, you are now in a private session, surrounded by objects of your household. We can take advantage of that. The following exercise is called: Snapshot of moving things.

The Ecstatic Dancers Journey

It all starts with an idea

Imagine you are dancing. While you dance and the music plays, suddenly an idea pops up in your mind. You received an image of how you want to make the next step.

Refusal to execute

Maybe fear, insecurity, a sense of inadequacy, or any of a range of reasons that work to hold you in your current movement pattern. You want to express something but you are just no doing it. You hesitate and miss the right moment to take action. Now you maybe you get bored and your creativity falls ‘asleep’. Maybe you even succeeded in putting more effort into the moves you always do, but it feels empty. You are still just hiding your insecurity. All you can do is await the gradual loss of your passion.

The inner fire

The music continues and all you did was the same stuff that you always do. Your dance feels unsatisfying. But consciously or unconsciously, you decide to put more effort to get what you need. Out of nowhere strength and courage arises in you.

The first threshold

This is the point where you actually enter into the field of development, leaving your known limits and venturing into an unknown and ‘frightening’ realm. You could be more than content, or even proud, to remain within the indicated bounds, and popular belief gives you every reason to fear so much as the first step into the unexplored. The development is always and everywhere beyond the veil of the known.

Entering the unknown

It’s your separation from your old known world. You show a willingness to undergo a metamorphosis. So you try to execute that movement and you may now encounter a minor setback. The movement you did was not even close to what you had in mind. All your nightmares come true. You look and feel silly.

Problems, tests and experiments

Practise is a series of tests that you must undergo to execute that movement right. Of course, you fail one or more times and you could be even about to lose your motivation. This stage requires and develops a lot of patience and persistence. Your face fears and pass barriers—again, again, and again. Meanwhile, there will be some preliminary victories, unsustainable ecstasies, and momentary glimpses of what you were searching for. Try by try you learn to get closer to the movement you intended to do.

The leap of faith

Like an onion, you peeled off the skin by skin until you reached its center. In this step, you must confront the real reason that holds you back from fully executing the movement idea. You now have to do the thing you really avoided doing. All the previous experiments have been leading to this place, all that follow will move out from here. Atonement consists in no more than the abandonment of that self-generated double monster—the devil thought to be God and the God thought to be the devil. This requires the death of your ego, and that is what is difficult. You must have faith to just accept yourself as a mortal human, imperfect and small as you are, and look upon yourself with compassion. Here you have to let go and surrender to your feelings. You will transcend with your fear and for a moment rise to a glimpse of the source. Your leap of faith will allow you to do the movement exactly the way you intended to do it, and it will leave you behind with a deep feeling that you deserved to feel good.

The Reward

You got what you want. You made your breakthrough. You unlocked a new skill and gained access to a new resource of almost infinite possibilities to dance. You have a new way of moving that you can play around with forever. And like the ability to ride a bike you will never lose dancing skills again.

Back to the beginning

And then everything starts from the beginning. Having found mastership in a specific movement, you want to do something else new, but you may not want to return feeling silly again and struggle with the practice. But you still must return to be a student again. The full round requires that you shall now begin to use your experience for the exploration of the next new movement.

Master of two worlds

As you continue to practice you become comfortable and competent in both being a master and a student. You have a lot of experience in dancing and at the same time, you still have no clue what dancing really is. The freedom to pass back and forth across the two worlds, —not contaminating the principles of the one with those of the other—is the talent of the master. The Cosmic Dancer, declares Nietzsche, does not rest heavily in a single spot, but gaily, lightly, turns and leaps from one position to another. You give up completely all attachment to your individual limitations and no longer resist the self (ego)-annihilation that is a prerequisite to grow. You are a master and student, and at the same time, you are none of them.

Freedom to dance

On this level, mastery leads to freedom from the fear of the ego-death, which in turn is the freedom to live. This is sometimes referred to as living in the moment, neither anticipating gaining more dancing skills nor being trapped in the boring comfort zone. You are totally relaxed. You listen to music and enjoy just dancing a little bit.

When does magic happen?

Magic lives in all intermediate worlds

Where opposites meet. Where stillness meets movement, slow meets fast, top meets bottom, past meets future, these are magical spaces. This is the intermediate world in which nothing has yet been decided and everything is open, in which neither-nor and both-and-apply.

The exciting moment of a New Year’s Eve fire cracker

A New Year’s Eve fire cracker is ignited on the fuse. The fuse sparks and burns in the direction of the paper roll. Then the sparks disappear in the roll of paper and for a brief moment there is silence and nothing can be seen. The brief moment of silence between the disappearance of the fuse and the bang, that is the magical moment. All attention is focused on that little moment.

Magic in dancing

As in archery, the string must be tensioned before the arrow can be fired. Before it rains, the sun has to lift the water into the clouds. The strongest magical moment is where tension turns into relaxation. The art is to hold this moment as long as possible and give it full attention. This requires the highest concentration, because when the attention wanders, the flow disappears, the whole movement “breaks” apart and loses its magic.

Mushrooms are interworld beings. In the forest, the mushrooms combine the largest living things (trees) with the smallest things (molecules). They feed the trees by the roots. When trees die, the fungi break them down into molecules again.
